Services for Martin Roy Bishop, 89, of Indianola who passed away Monday, February 10, 2025, will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 14, 2025, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Indianola, with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Martin is survived by his wife of 71 years, Maude Bishop; daughter Marjorie (Merrill) Norris; son, Mark (Julia) Bishop; grandchildren, Jason (Cara) Norris, Kyle (Jessica) Norris, Andrea (Matthew) Gallagher, Lindsay (Tyler) Fick, Mackenzie Johnson-Bishop and Avery Johnson-Bishop; great-grandchildren, Evangaline "Evie" Norris, Paisley Norris, Decker Norris, Elliotte "Ellie" Gallagher, Avery Gallagher; brother, Dean (Maria Olga) Bishop; as-well-as nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents L. Kenneth and Alice Bishop, and brother Larry Bishop.
Martin grew up on a farm in rural Indianola, graduated from Indianola High School in 1953, and eventually earned his bachelor's degree from Simpson college, while working nights at Firestone. He worked at Firestone for 30+ years, where he retired as a Department Manager. He then spent the next 12 years as an Insurance Agent serving his local community.
Martin lived a life of faith and service. He was active at Redeemer Lutheran, serving many years on the church council. He was in the United States Army Reserve for over 38 years, serving as the captain of their rifle and pistol team, before eventually retiring as a Colonel. He was a Boy scout leader, involved in various saddle clubs, 4H, Little League (including coaching his son and grandsons), and Lions Club, among other community activities. In Lions, he and Maude spent many years testing 1000's of children's eyes through their "KidSight" activities. Martin held various offices for Lions Club at the local district and state level. He received numerous International Lions Presidential awards for his many hours of service. He served as District Governor from 2007 – 2008.
In his spare time, Martin also enjoyed "tinkering" on their farm and playing golf, where he learned and became quite proficient at creative accounting.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, February 13, 2025 at Overton Funeral Home. Memorials, in memory of Martin, may be given to Redeemer Lutheran Church or Iowa Lions Foundation for KidSight.
