Services for Marjorie Lenore King, 85, of Prole, who passed peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, April 15 at home, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 21, 2026 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Des Moines.
Marjorie Lenore King (Cox) was born on August 7, 1940, in St. Louis Missouri, to William Doyle and LaVerne Kathrine (Schlaht) Cox. She grew up in Des Moines and graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in 1958. It was there that she met the love of her life, Thomas J. King. They were united in marriage at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Des Moines on July 28, 1960.
The couple lived in Norfolk, Virginia, while Tom served in the U.S. Navy. During that time, they welcomed their first daughter, Joanie Marie. After Tom completed his service, they returned to Des Moines, where their second daughter, Lori Sue, was born. In 1966, they moved to their beloved farm in Prole, Iowa, where they built a life rooted in love, hard work, and family.
Marge was a dedicated homemaker while her daughters were young, later returning to the workforce after they entered junior high. She retired from State Surety Bonding and Republic Insurance Company in Urbandale.
Marge’s faith in Jehovah God and her love for her family and friends shone through in everything she did. She was an exceptional cook who managed to make every meal “fit for a King.” Her flower and vegetable gardens flourished under her care, yielding bountiful harvests to can and freeze. Her chili sauce was unmatched, and her Thanksgiving turkey and dressing were legendary within the family.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Marge found joy in supporting her loved ones in every endeavor. She shared her time and talents generously, serving as a 4-H leader in Warren County for ten years, where she passed along her skills in cooking, sewing, and crafting. Marge was also a gifted artist with a poem for every occasion.
She loved vacations with Tom and their girls, cherished her annual visits to the Iowa State Fair (especially the corn dogs), and never minded spending each wedding anniversary at the Warren County Fair because it meant time spent together as a family.
Marge faced life with grace, patience, and an endless capacity for love. She never complained and gave freely of her time to those she cared for most.
Marge will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her husband of 65 years, Thomas J. King; daughters, Joanie Sonnek and Lori (Pat) Rinkert; grandchildren, Jennifer (Dave) Reed, Jaclynn (Luke) Claas, Kaitlynn (Ryan) Altomare, and Theodore Craig; nine great-grandchildren, Dottie, Linken, Bruce and Hattie Reed, Leighton, Fischer, and Merritt Claas, Rhett and Rodney Altomare; siblings, Virginia Plummer, Barbara Cox and Brent Cox; many other family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Doyle and Laverne (Schlaht) Cox; parents-in-law, Thomas and Rhea (Dietmeyer) King; sister-in-law, Patricia (King) Stadler; brother-in-law, Robert Stadler; nephew, Daniel Korte.
Visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, April 20 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends. Memorials in memory of Marjorie may be made to the family for a contribution at a later date.
