Obituary

Christian funeral services for Marilyn Patricia Wood (nee Engh), 92, resurrected to new life on Sunday, January 5, 2025, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2025, at Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Indianola.  A visitation will be held on Friday, January 10, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Trinity United Presbyterian Church's fellowship hall. Burial of cremains will be at a later date.

Marilyn was born at her grandparent's home in Cottonwood, Minnesota. During her youth, she and her family lived in Minnesota, Texas and Nebraska. Marilyn graduated from Nebraska City High School and earned her R.N. degree at Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital in Omaha.

Marilyn leaves her family with many cherished memories for her having been a part of their lives. In addition to her impact on family, Marilyn's nursing days profoundly benefitted the lives of many to whom she gave compassionate care. At Bishop Clarkson Hospital, Marilyn attended to patients living in iron lungs during the height of the polio epidemic. Later, as a public health nurse in Lincoln, Nebraska, she vaccinated thousands of school children when the polio vaccine became available.

In 1953, Marilyn met the love of her life, Glen Allen Wood, and they were married in 1954. The couple spent two years in California during Al's naval service and then moved to Indianola in 1957. Marilyn loved being a full-time homemaker and mother to her three sons, with whom she shared her strong values for faith, education, independence and courtesy.

Friendships, as well as family, were intrinsic to Marilyn's life. She valued her memberships in P.E.O., Shakespeare Club, Kensington Club, Bridge Club, and Lunch Bunch. A member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church since 1957, Marilyn shared her time and talents on the memorial committee and the wedding reception committee. She was a member of the church's MacAlister Clan, where she formed life-long bonds and hosted the clan's Christmas party for 40+ years.

Among Marilyn's passions were European travel, history, reading, cooking and movies. Her knowledge of WWII was scholarly, and even her young great-grandchildren join in on replicating her cherished recipes. Marilyn's Norwegian heritage was also a source of great pride.

But Marilyn's greatest passion was for her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially her husband of 70+ years Glen Allen Wood; sons Brian (Lorrie) Wood, Scott (Jane) Wood, and Kent (Terri) Wood; grandchildren Katie Wood, Dan (Claire) Wood, Jeff Wood, Cody (Christina Ostmeyer) Wood, Cary Wood, Ryan (Gabby) Wood, and Kelsey Wood; great-grandchildren Ruby and Oliver Wood; sister-in-law Lynne McLaughlin; brother-in-law Bruce (Linda) Wood; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Harris and Marian Engh, brothers Jim (Pat) Engh and Don McLaughlin, and in-laws Albert and Elsie Wood.

Marilyn's family would like to thank the staff at The Village, Caitlyn Robins and Ashley Allen for their loving care.

Memorials in Marilyn's name may be made to Trinity United Presbyterian Church, the Indianola Public Library, or a charity of your choice.
