Margaret Ann Brommel, 94, of St Marys, Iowa, passed away peacefully at her home on September 5, 2026.
A Rosary will be recited 4 p.m., Friday, September 11, 2026, in the St. Marys Parish Hall. Visitation will follow the Rosary from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St Marys. Interment will follow in the St. Marys Cemetery.
Margaret was born February 28, 1932, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Alphons and Margaret (Norris) Lause. She grew up in Des Moines across from Witmer Park Lake, where she became a skillful skater at a young age, learning to ice skate a figure 8.
She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Des Moines.
She met Jim Brommel at a Catholic Church sponsored dance for singles, creating a life together that would span 67 years. They were married on September 25, 1954, and in 1955 they began a lifetime of farming near St. Marys, where they raised six children.
Margaret and Jim enjoyed an active social life and were known for opening their home to friends, neighbors and family. For 35 years, Margaret and Jim spent their winters in Mission, Texas, where she accompanied Jim as he sang in popular jam sessions. She would help him distribute CDs of his music. Margaret loved swimming in the pool, bicycling around the area and for many years leading an early morning yoga session.
Margaret had a special fondness for games and social gatherings. She enjoyed Fast Track, Dominoes, Bridge, and cards. Tuesday coffee gatherings with friends, followed by games, was a favorite weekly tradition. She also looked forward to the monthly Red Hat Society activities. She was among the initial First Responders organized in St. Marys and proudly served for 12 years.
She lived her faith through service to her church, helping with the church’s annual chicken dinner fundraiser and served for many years on the Altar and Rosary Society. She continued to find ways to help others well into her 90s, reflecting the generous spirit and faith that guided her throughout her life.
Margaret was also a proud member of the Rod and Gun Club at Lake George. A family gathering was held this past July at the lake shelter. Nearly all of her family attended for a potluck, fishing, swimming and an afternoon of simply being together.
Margaret is survived by her children, Carol (Robert) Bartles, Jim (Joy) Brommel, Mary (Alan) Large, David (Kathy) Brommel, and Jean (David Pitt) Brommel; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Brommel; her parents, Alphons and Margaret Lause; her brothers, James Lause, Loris “Lou” Lause and Harold Lause; her son, John Brommel; her granddaughter Brianna Brommel; and her great-granddaughter, Hope Brommel.
Memorials in memory of Margaret may be made to the Pink Tractor Foundation, St. Marys Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission, Texas, or the Jackson Township (St. Marys) Fire Department.
