Obituary

Funeral Services for Mahlon Edgington (79) of Indianola, who passed away Tuesday, October 10th, 2023, will be held at 10:30AM, Saturday, October 21st, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church in Indianola with full military rites. Cremation following services.

Upon graduating from SE Warren High School in 1962, Mahlon attended the University of Iowa before joining the United States Air Force. Upon release from basic training, he was stationed at the Air National Guard base in Des Moines, IA. In August of 1966, he was hired by IBM Corporation and retired after completing thirty years of employment. In 1994 Mahlon joined the Hy-Vee Corporate Office in their IT department, where Mahlon was instrumental during their transformative years as they moved their headquarters from Chariton to West Des Moines.

Mahlon married the love of his life, Sue Cross, on April 8th, 1967. They were blessed with four children and five grandchildren. Mahlon had many joys in life, but his highest level of fulfillment was being in the company of his family. He was a very supportive father who attended all of his Childrens' sporting events and extracurricular activities. Mahlon was a wonderful role model for his children and each of them would tell you that they are proud to follow in his footsteps. He was a great father, and a fantastic grandfather who always demonstrated the importance of looking at this world with a curious, critical eye. Of even greater importance than this was to instill in his children the old-world tenets of character, like honesty and integrity.

His wife Sue absolutely adored him. They enjoyed spending their time in one another's presence, whether it was traveling or just having a quiet moment with a cup of coffee. Some of their most precious moments were riding old steam engine trains together. Their most treasured times were always the moments they enjoyed with the family that they built together. Our loss is vast!

Mahlon is survived by his wife, Sue; children, Michael (Jackquline) Edgington, Bridget Edgington, Jonathan (Darci) Edgington, Joseph (Laura) Edgington: grandchildren, Matthew, Aubrey, Josephine, Samantha, Mara; sister, Carol Ann (Gail) Endres, Ankeny, IA; brother-in-law, Wayne Findley, Stuart, IA, Carol Sue Edgington, Kalamazoo, MI; 14 nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, J.L and Marvel Edgington; siblings, Irene Findley, Norman Edgington, Blaine Edgington, Doyle Edgington, James Edgington and Dennis Edgington; infant nephew, Curtis Edgington, Colorado.

Visitation will be held 4 to 8PM, Friday, October 20th at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends. Memorial contributions can be made in his name to your local Salvation Army or the Matthew 25 fund with the First United Methodist Church, Indianola.
