IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lyle Steven
Vickroy
November 29, 1946 – September 2, 2023
Lyle Steven Vickroy was born in rural Indianola, Iowa, on November 29th, 1946. He was the 6th of 11 children born to Owen and Hazel Vickroy. He was born right in the middle of five brothers and five sisters. He was an active little blonde boy that the family nicknamed "Hoppy." He went to a small country school and eventually attended Interstate 35 High School where he graduated in 1965. He was a good looking and popular guy who was voted by his classmates as having the "best build."
After high school he joined the Marine Corps Reserves and served for 6 years. He was an excellent marksman and received high marks for his abilities. He had many fond memories of his time in the Marines, especially since he served with his older brother, Alvin. He liked to tell stories of their antics in the military. He was proud, yet humble, about having served his country.
Lyle worked in construction and found a knack for drywall. In 1972, he started his own drywall business, J & L Drywall, Inc., with his future brother-in-law, Jim Weeks. In the same year, Lyle started dating the love of his life, Joyce Howe. The country boy wooed the pretty blonde city girl by playing Johnny Cash tunes on his guitar, which she thought he had written himself and was destined to be famous. They married in 1974 and welcomed their first daughter, Brandi JoLynne, in 1976.
In 1978, they had another daughter, Misty Michelle, who they liked to call "Mischief." Their youngest daughter, Jessica Leigh, rounded out the family when she came along in 1982. The family lived in Indianola while Joyce taught school in Des Moines as well as opening her own tumbling business, the Indianola Tumbling Center.
Lyle liked to be outdoors. The family spent many summers out on their pontoon boat at Lake Rathbun. He also enjoyed fishing and taking all three girls with him (or at least they think he enjoyed it.) In later years, they would spend lots of time in the family swimming pool. Lyle played banjo and guitar and loved listening to country music.
Lyle retired in 2006 and Joyce a few years later. They went on many wonderful vacations together and sometimes with friends including Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Costa Rica. Lyle also got to enjoy many hunting and fishing expeditions with friends. A favorite was a fishing trip to Alaska and a few hunting trips to Roswell, New Mexico.
Although he was a somewhat quiet man, he made many friends over the years. He became especially close to his "Sports Page Family," who he and Joyce would meet with on many a Wednesday night.
Lyle was contemplative and didn't have a need for useless conversation or words, but when the time was right, his quick wit would make an appearance and leave everyone in stitches. He was a storyteller. He could remember every detail from every event that happened and had a gift for the retelling and reenacting of those events. He was very bright and liked to keep his mind challenged with crossword puzzles and solitaire.
Lyle was most proud of his grandchildren. He was blessed with seven grandsons and one beautiful granddaughter who, in fun, he referred to as his favorite. He will be dearly missed by them all.
Lyle passed away peacefully, at home on September 2nd, 2023, with his loving wife and devoted daughters by his side.
Lyle is survived by his wife of 49 years, Joyce; daughters, Brandi (Doug) Larson, Misty (Josh) Parker, and Jessica Ohnemus; grandchildren, Wil Larson, Jonas Parker, Drake Larson, Noah Parker, Reid Larson, Brynn Ohnemus, Gabriel Parker, and Daxyn Ohnemus; sisters, Catherine Stout, Judy White, and Vera Terry; brothers, Alvin and Dennis Vickroy.
