February 13, 1943 – August 9, 2023
Lula Mae Clausen, 80, born in Indianola, Iowa, on February 13, 1943, and passed quietly on August 9, 2023. She has lived in Indianola since 1973. She was the daughter of Elmer Hugh Beard and Rayetta Louise Nutting who preceded her in death.
Lula graduated from Southeast Warren High School in 1961. After high school, Lula went to work for IMT insurance in Des Moines. On June 3, 1967, she was united in marriage to Dewain Clausen, in Milo. To this union were born two sons, Karl and John.
When Dewain enlisted in the Navy, Lula Mae worked for Tway Van & Storage in Omaha, Nebraska, till Dewain was assigned to El Centro, California Naval Air station and while there Karl was born. Then Lula Mae and Karl moved back to her parents' home in Milo while Dewain was deployed on Enterprise aircraft carrier off the coast of Vietnam. While being deployed their second son John was born.
After Dewain's four-year Navy enlistment, he returned to Indianola. Lula Mae was involved with the Boy Scouts with Karl and John and joined Watkins in 1973. She was also involved with the Presbyterian Church in numerous activities including serving as Deacon and Memorial committee. Lula Mae was President for Ray Pehrson Fan club in the 1980's, traveling to Nashville, Tennessee for several years. She met many country music stars and collecting autographs. In addition, Lula Mae was involved with the National Balloon Museum and Balloon Classic held in Indianola each August. Lula Mae, Karl, and John were part of a chase crew for several balloon pilots and earned Chase Crew of Year one year. Lula Mae also earned a Destiny Builders trip to Los Cabo, Mexico with Watkins.
Lula Mae is survived by her husband, Dewain; children, Karl (Dee) Clausen, John (Janelle) Clausen; grandchildren, Miranda (Cody Knepp), Robert, Jakob (Marissa), Jaylon, and Jared; and brother, Ed (Donna) Beard.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Indianola. A private inurnment of cremains will be held in the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery, Adel. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, you send donations to Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Lula Mae's name.
