Lonnie “Pete” Algreen, 87, of Martensdale, IA, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, April 2, 2026. Lonnie was born in Winterset, IA, on December 12, 1938, to Vern and Edith Algreen. Lonnie grew up on a farm near Dexter, IA, and attended Dexter High School (Class of 1957). Lonnie married Mary Ann Berglund in 1966.
Lonnie began his career in the US Navy (1957 – 1961) and then the US Air Force (1961 – 1966) and was stationed all over the world to include Okinawa, Japan; Key West; Bethesda, Maryland; and Grand Forks, ND, where he met his wife, and they recently celebrated their 60th anniversary April 1st, 2026.
Lonnie and Mary Ann first moved to Des Moines to begin their family, then Earlham and Avon Lake before moving to Blackduck, MN, to operate a dairy farm. They eventually made their way to Martensdale, IA, where they settled in 1979. Lonnie spent most of his working years at Firestone, Chicago Northwestern Railroad, and Woodsmith.
Lonnie was a generous and loyal man who spent a lot of his time woodworking to create unique handcrafted gifts for his friends and family. He also spent a lot of time in the yard and gardening, as well as being very active in the Democratic party in Warren County and helped run the caucus in each election. He was very respected and will be greatly missed.
