LEE R. McCOMBS Indianola Memorial services for Lee R. McCombs, 74, who passed away Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, September 13 at the Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Indianola. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to services. Lee, son of Roy and Ruth Cunningham McCombs, was born in Des Moines, IA on January 19, 1940. The family lived in Saylorville until 1952 when they moved to Humeston, IA. Lee graduated from Humeston HS in 1958. He then attended Drake University and Grandview College. Lee was joined in marriage to Karen Surbaugh in June of 1959. Their happy union produced two children. A son, Kevin, born in 1960 and a daughter, Lori, in 1965. Lee and Karen resided in Des Moines until 1965. They then moved to Humeston until they settled permanently in Indianola in 1973. Lee worked in the automotive industry from 1960 up until his retirement in 2002. It was 1965 when Lee opened K-L Parts in Humeston, and in 1972 he opened the store in Indianola with stores following in Madrid, Adel, Centerville and Pleasantville. His son, Kevin, later joined him in the business. Throughout his life, Lee enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trap shooting. In his retirement years he was passionate about woodworking, gardening and feeding the birds and wildlife attracted to his gardens. Lee will be greatly missed and his memory will live on especially at the large family gatherings where the bounty of Lee's gardens have always been much appreciated and enjoyed. Survivors include his wife, Karen; son, Kevin (Melanie) McCombs of Indianola; daughter, Lori (Eric) Jeppson of Stoughton, WI; grandchildren, Andy McCombs, Amanda (Austin) Smith, Addison (Chris) McCombs, Jessica and Ellie McCombs, Gunnar and Thor (Keely) Jeppson and Kristin Jeppson; great-granddaughter, Rylee Smith; sister, Elaine (Chuck) Lindstrom; and sisters-in-law, Cheryl (Carlos) Paugh and Phyllis Carlton. Lee was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Ruth McCombs and brother-in-law Bill Carlton.
