LaVerne was born August 20, 1936 at the Indianola Hospital to Lawrence and Florence Zimmerman and was a lifelong resident of Warren County. He married Shirley Ann Davey on May 30, 1958.

He worked at the Blue Ribbon hatchery and later retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company after 25 years. Most recently, LaVerne enjoyed employment at People's Trust and Savings Bank.

LaVerne served as a member of the Iowa Army National Guard as a Chaplain's Assistant and is an honorary member of the Indianola Volunteer Fire Department.

He is past deacon and charter member of First Assembly of God Church of Indianola. His passions were his love for the lord, his wife, and his family. LaVerne loved nature and was an avid outdoorsman.

LaVerne was preceded in death by his father and is survived by his wife, Shirley; son, Randy and wife, Beth of Indianola; daughter, Tamara Scott and husband, Lowell of Norwalk; five grandchildren: Jessica Gilbertson and husband, Steve; Blake, Acacia and Skylar Scott; and Brooke Zimmerman. He is also survived by his mother, Florence; siblings, Lyle (Ruthie) of Ottumwa, Don (Sue), Ken (Marj) all of Indianola, Ron (Debbie) of Treynor, and Sherry Marlow (Rev. Greg) of Ellendale, NE; and a host of beloved in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 20 at the First Assembly of God Church in Indianola with burial following in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, July 19 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola where family will be present to greet friends from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be given to his church or Hospice of Central Iowa - Knoxville.
