Larry Lee Hughes, 86, passed away January 27, 2023 at UnityPoint Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, IA.
Larry was born September, 11, 1936 in Adair, IA, the son of Andrew and Terese Hughes. Larry grew up in Adair County on small farms and graduated from Anita High School in 1954.
Larry attended Iowa State University for a short time before joining the United States Air Force in Texas, where he welcomed his daughter, Kendra. After Larry's Air Force career, he graduated from NW Missouri State with an accounting degree. While attending college, Larry met Bettye. They later married and combined their families and moved to Norwalk. During this time, he started Black Gold Realty in 1973, where he discovered his life's passion. In 1997, after 29 years of marriage, Larry laid Bettye to rest after a battle with cancer. Larry very much enjoyed and was very active in GOP local and state government, even leading to a Senate run in 1998. Larry met and married Patti in 1999 and due to Patti's love for horses, they moved to an acreage in Ackworth where they lived until Patti's passing.
Larry is survived by Cheri (Van) Atherton, Larry (Janet) Hill, Kendra (Scott) Hughes and Eddie (Jacquie) Johnson; grandchildren, Troy Atherton, Todd Atherton, Trisha Darby, Carrie Thede, Ashley Mowery, Molly Hill, Angie Raymond, Trinity Hughes, Nic Hughes, Hope Reeves, Sierra Hughes, and Patti Johnson; 23 great-grandchildren; 4 great great-grandchildren with another on the way; sister, Jorene Simon; and many nieces and nephews. Larry is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bettye; wife, Patti; and brothers, John and Vince.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, 34024 Veterans Memorial Dr, Adel, IA 50003 or Helping Hand of Warren County, 109 E Clinton Ave, Indianola, IA 50125 in his name.
