My dad left us Friday, December 3, 2010 at 5:12 p.m. His wife, of 62 years, Viola, daughter Merilee, son-in-law and buddy, Ray were with him. Dad spent the last 3 months of his life living in Las Cruces, NM. He loved the sunshine everyday and always woke up with a smile and never a complaint. After graduating high school at the age of 16, Dad worked five years in the Civilian Conservation Corps and then attended Morningside College, while working as an orderly. He spent two years in the Navy and then returned to finish college. With his degree he taught Biology in Canton, SD. Dad and Mom were married in 1948 at the Little Brown Church. Together they owned and operated Rollins Tot Shop and Fabric Store for the next 26 years. In 1973 Dad went to work for the State of Iowa Health Department until his retirement in 1986. After retirement they traveled to Texas during the winter. One summer was spent in the National Park Service's protecting a Peregrine Falcon Nest. Dad's volunteer work included helping the elderly in Indianola with their finances, Instructor and volunteer EMT, and looking over his two grandsons Jesse and Caleb. Dads love was golf, which he took up at the age of 72, investments and Louis L'amour books.
