Kenneth Joseph Bendon was born on July 25 th , 1932 to Owen and Mary Bendon. He was raised on a small farm in Portsmouth, Iowa. Soon after high school he was drafted and proudly served his country during the Korean War as a Red Devil in the 92 nd Armored Field Artillery. After the service he married his wife, Mary Louise, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and began a life filled with family and faith. He was a talented carpenter by trade and later moved to Des Moines, Iowa for a position with the Federal Government in the Housing Urban Development Department, where he retired in 1994. After retirement Ken kept busy with many different roles including opening a home inspection company.
Ken had a life filled with many blessings, but he most cherished his family and his faith. He was very proud of his loving marriage of 63 years and the success of his children and grandchildren. He was a devout Catholic and attended St Thomas Aquinas Church in Indianola. He loved to travel with his wife and visited many international countries. His favorite (and only) team was the Iowa Hawkeyes. If Ken saw you around town wearing Hawkeye apparel he would often greet you with "Go Hawks!" He never met a stranger. He valued hard work and generosity. He had a kind and loving heart and took joy in helping those in most need of his help.
He is survived by his wife Mary Louise Bendon; children, Judy (Mike) Ancell, Don (Jeanne) Bendon, Barbara (Randy Gathers) Bendon, and Mary Ann Bendon; eight grandchildren, Jill(Travis) Young, Brad(Kelly) Peterson, Jaci(Tyler) Marberry, Joe(Katherine) Bendon, Amanda(David Manning) Bendon, Cole(Courtney) Lawler, Logan Lawler, and Emily Lawler, eight great grandchildren: Lilly, Hayden, Griffin, Annabelle, Jocelyn, McKenna, Brady, and Harper and brother, Jim Bendon. He was preceded in death by his parents Owen and Mary Bendon; and infant son, Kenneth Edmund Bendon.
Memorials may be given to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
