Kelley Renae Bonnes was born November 13th, 1982 in Des Moines to Robert and Becky (Sudbrock) Bell. Kelley was the middle child between Kim and Kerry. Kelley grew up in St. Charles, but spent lots of time with her grandmother and cousins in the area. Every summer Kelley and her sisters would pick Robert's sweet corn and sell it in town. Robert had a gift for picking the right kind of sweet corn and Kelley would make sure they capitalized on the sale.
Kelley attended Interstate 35 schools and graduated in 2001. Elementary school for Kelley was held in St. Charles, followed up by junior and senior high in Truro. Kelley received multiple academic awards throughout her school career, but sports were her favorite. At an early age, Kelley started competition tumbling. She later added softball, basketball and track, but her passion was volleyball, which she continued in college. Kelley enjoyed hanging out with her friends which, a few times, got her into a little trouble. After graduation, Kelley attended Simpson College, where she majored in accounting and minored in management. Kelley graduated from Simpson in 2005 and entered the workforce ultimately landing at Principal.
Kelley was a wiz with numbers and excel spreadsheets. She was quickly made a home and many friends at Principal. Kelley worked hard and was eventually promoted to a manager position, where she worked on many large projects. One of her favorite roles was interviewing potential interns from all over the country to join the internship program. Kelley later made her way to Federal Home Loan Bank working in mortgage accounting. Kelley stayed with the bank until she was unable to continue to work.
Kelley and Jeff met at a mutual friend's wedding. Kelley was college friends with the bride and Jeff was in the wedding party. The couple was married in 2008 and later welcomed their first child Kaitlyn. Kacy, Kamryn and Jake followed in the years after. While the kids were little, Kelley continued to play adult co-ed volleyball and even a little church league softball. Once Kaitlyn was old enough to play, Kelley switched to coaching volleyball. Coaching turned into being a board member for the Indianola Volleyball Club, which she really enjoyed. As Kelley's health issues progressed, she was not able to continue to coach. She then became a fixture on the sidelines or in the stands of any of the kid's games. She could always be heard cheering on the kids or grumbling at a bad call.
Kelley passed away at home on August 6th, 2025. Kelley's last days were spent peacefully and comfortably surrounded by family and friends under the care of Unity Point at Home hospice. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Becky Bell; grandparents, Gerald and Bettie Sudbrock, Joseph and Veronica Bell; aunts and uncles, Jeanne Reynolds, Catherine and Tom Noga, Jerry Sudbrock and Marvin Eldred.
Kelley is survived by her husband, Jeff; children, Kaitlyn Bonnes, Kacy Bonnes, Kamryn Bonnes, Jake Bonnes; sisters, Kimberly (Jeremy) Cross and Kerry (Kane) Ellenwood; nieces and nephews, Brooklyn Cross, Ethan Cross, Koen Ellenwood, and Kendall Ellenwood; parents-in-law, Steve and Wanda Bonnes; aunts and uncles, Bill (Sue) Sudbrock, Ginger (Lester) Allen, Judy Hayden, Therese Eldred, Loretta (Raymond) Foley, Lucy (Dave) White, Joe (Mary) Bell, Pat (Sharon) Bell, Tom (Lorretta) Bell, Barb (Jim) Shutt; and cousin, Doug Sudbrock.
