KEITH McCONNELL Prole After battling cancer for eighteen months, Whitey, "Mayor of Prole", passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Kavanagh House on 56th Street, Des Moines, Ia. Services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, July 28 at the Martensdale Community Church with burial following in Wallace Cemetery, Wick, Ia. Keith Eugene McConnell, son of Alice (Lee) and Fay McConnell was born September 6, 1938 on a farm near Prole. He went nine years to a country school, Dover Elementary, and graduated from Martensdale High School in 1958. Keith attended Drake University and worked 37 years at Armstrong Tire and Rubber. He served in the United States Army Reserves. Some of Keith's childhood memories were annual Bible camp, County Fair, State Fair with Uncle Milt, his horses, and car racing. Later it was sports of every kind, corvettes and car racing. In his Golden years he liked playing cards and pool at his winter home in Alamo, TX, and Cutty's in Des Moines, and watching car races. He was a Mason for many years and a member of Eastgate Lodge #630, Scottish Rite Lodge and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. As most of you know, his greatest loves were talking and people. If someone accidently mentioned sports they were in for a long session. Survivors include sisters, Helen Phillips of Ames and Wilma (Chuck) Seymour of Indianola; long-time companion, Marlene Woodard; ten nieces and nephews; many great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews; uncles and aunts, Keith Eugene (Maxine) Lee and Paul (Phyllis) Lee of Indianola; and other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Dorothy, brother-in-law Robert Phillips and nephew Kyle Phillips.
