Adeline Elizabeth Kaderabek was born at home in Cresco, Iowa on May 8th, 1920. Her fondness for her hometown and her many happy memories there were always close to her heart. Her elementary school classmates, some of whom she remained close to throughout her life, came up with her nickname, Kaddy, which captured her spunk. She was educated by the Catholic schools in Cresco and graduated from the public high school in 1938.
Kaddy attended Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids and UNI achieving her teaching certificate. She taught elementary grades in Letts, Vinton and Iowa City. On June 19, 1946 she married her beloved husband, James Barnes Helmick. They resided on the family farm in Columbus Junction.
Throughout her married life, Kaddy continued her career as a substitute teacher and was involved in her community and church. She was active with her husband in Farm Bureau for many years. She enjoyed sewing, making rolls, and planning creative events for her friends and family. She was involved in all her kids' activities from scouts to sports to religious ed and homework.
In 1970, Kaddy resumed teaching full time and was passionate about helping kids become readers. She attended many seminars and took advantage of opportunities to enhance her teaching skills.
She LOVED her grandchildren. They called her Gramere and could count on her to be at their activities and supporting their interests. Their friends delighted in their Gramere's company. They all were impressed by her positive attitude and zest for life.
Kaddy was sadly preceded in death by her husband who died in 1967. Kaddy is deeply loved and survived by her children; Ann and John Williams of Indianola and their 4 children; Barbara and Tiana Robison of Washington DC; Craig and Sheila Helmick of Columbus Junction and their 2 children; Diane and Tom Homan of Indianola and their 3 children; and Jim Helmick of Columbia, MO and his daughter. Kaddy is also survived by her brother Ray Kaderabek of Santa Rosa, CA, nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Kaddy devoted her life to her faith, her family, and was an advocate for children. She loved reading. She kept abreast of issues and enjoyed a good debate. Her good humor was enjoyed by all who knew her. She was passionate about education. She welcomed into her home people of all races, creeds, and backgrounds. The examples she set will stay with her family forever.
In lieu of flowers, the family is establishing a memorial fund to promote children's libraries. Contributions may be made to the family.
