Judy Bernia
Murray
September 11, 1943 — July 4, 2026
Services for Judy Bernia Murray, 82, of Des Moines, who passed away Saturday, July 4, 2026 in Des Moines, will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 10, 2026 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in Sandyville Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
Judy grew up in Milo, Iowa, where she developed the straightforward honesty that everyone who knew her came to appreciate. If you asked for her opinion, she would tell you exactly how it was.
Nothing in Judy's life brought her more happiness than her grandchildren. She adored every moment spent with them and never could say no. If they wanted ice cream for breakfast, then ice cream for breakfast it was. She always had their favorite snacks on hand and made sure they felt loved, spoiled, and welcome whenever they were with her.
Judy found comfort in life's simple pleasures. She was an avid reader of the Des Moines Register and especially enjoyed novels by Mary Higgins Clark. Nearly every day began with a pot of Folgers coffee, old country music playing in the background, and a crossword puzzle waiting to be solved. She had a special fondness for Kenny Rogers, a soft spot for white-haired biker boys, and never turned down a good story shared around the kitchen table.
Some of the happiest times were spent with family and friends, sitting together over coffee and Pall Malls, swapping stories, laughing until it hurt, and enjoying each other's company.
She also had quite the sweet tooth. Cherry treats, chocolate, and Rolos were among her favorites, and anyone who knew Judy knew that sharing something sweet was just another way she shared her love.
Judy's legacy is one of honesty, generosity, laughter, and unwavering love for her family. She taught those around her that love is often found in the smallest gestures such as a favorite snack, a cup of coffee, a shared laugh, or even ice cream for breakfast. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She is survived by her son, Jeffrey Murray; sister, Roberta Hatfield; grandchildren; Monica Murray, Jacob Murray, Jessica Fitzgerald, Bambi Murray, Storie Spencer, Kayla Thomas, Nickolas Thomas and Sara Murray; and many great-grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her children, Bob, John and Sheryl Murray; her parents, Fred and Myrtle Drake; and many brothers and sisters.
