Judith Arlene (Hommer) Newbury was born on July 29th, 1938 in New Virginia, Iowa to Ernest and Sylvia (Sanders) Hommer. She had 4 brothers, Ray, Lee, Dewey and Lynn and one sister, Rose. Judy graduated from New Virginia High School and Simpson College. She participated in multiple activities during high school including basketball and high school band. She was united in marriage to Dan Newbury for over 55 years. They moved to Indianola in 1966.
Surviving are her children, Tab (Traci) of Urbandale and their children Erin and Katie. Rob (Julie) of Waukee and their children Rachel, Jenna, Joel and Ava Zeman, Tammy (Trent) Petersen of Indianola, Don (Christy) of St. Mary's and their children Madison and Trey. She was preceded in death by her husband Dan, parents, brothers Ray, Lee and Dewey, and sister Rose.
Judy got her teaching degree from Simpson College and taught elementary school for several years at Greenfield and Colfax, and also substituted in the Indianola school district. Later in life, she was an aide at Indianola schools and did flower arrangements for Bloomin Greenery in Indianola. She loved watching her children and grandchildren participate in many different sporting events. She loved the Iowa Hawkeyes, especially women's basketball, and she rarely missed a college softball game on TV. She also had a passion for cooking and gardening. She was a tremendous bowler and appeared on the Let's Go Bowling TV show several times. She enjoyed playing golf and won the club championship at Indianola Golf and Country Club several years as well as several Mother-Son tournaments. Judy was a cancer survivor for over 16 years.
Judy passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at Windsor Manor in Indianola. Private Family Graveside services will be held at a later date in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
