Obituary

Services for Judge Maurice Connor Herrick, born at Gilmore City, Iowa on September 11, 1912 the son of Doctor Rupert C. and Ingeborg Herrick, who died Monday, May 25, 2009, at the Village Health Center in Indianola, will be held 10 a.m., Friday, May 29, 2009 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Indianola of which he was a member.  Burial with military rites will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

After high school, Maurice attended the University of Iowa where he received a B.A. degree in 1935 and a Juris Doctor degree in 1937 with high distinction. He married Pamela F. Diemer in 1934 and to this union four children were born, Peter, Allan, Pamela and Sarah. Following Pamela's death in 1969 he was married to Marguerite M. Morrissey of Winterset, IA.

Maurice was associated with Herrick and Langdon and the Iowa State Insurance Commission in Des Moines. He then served in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII. Upon his return he was private practice in Indianola and also served as Warren County Attorney and City Attorney for the City of Indianola until his appointment on January 1, 1964 to the District Court bench, where he served until January 1, 1986. After resigning from the District Court he continued to serve as a Senior Judge in District 5.  He was a member of the Iowa State and American Bar Association, American Legion, Order of Coif, a honorary legal fraternity.

He is survived by his wife, Marguerite; children, Allan (Carolyn) Herrick of Indianola, Pam (Darrell) Hines of Des Moines and Sarah (Jim) Keegan of Manning; 11 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pamela; son, Peter; and brothers, Thomas, Rupert and Donald Herrick.

Visitation will be held 3 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 28 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. A Vigil service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be given to A.L.S.
