Joseph Benton Hornaday was born in Des Moines, IA on Oct 19, 1962 and passed away from pancreatic cancer on May 19, 2014 at home surrounded by immediate family. He was 51 years old. Joe was affectionately known as just "Joe", "Ol' Dad" or "Bucket" to most people. Joe worked at the Greenwood Lounge for the last seven years of his life. Customers, co-workers, friends and mere acquaintances were all amazing in supporting him through his illness. They came to his aid during the difficult nine months of treatment. They all became part of the Hornaday family. Joe grew up in Indianola, IA and spent most of his life around Des Moines. An athlete and sports enthusiast, Joe played baseball, football and tennis during his early school years, and continued to play baseball at Simpson College. Joe could often be found on the golf course, most notably at Waveland in Des Moines. Joe was passionate about food and cooking and got great pleasure from making fantastic meals for family and friends year-round. Joe was preceded in death by grandparents Hugh and Olive Hornaday, Cash and Maxine Speed; uncle Dick Hornaday, and father Bob "Crow" Hornaday. Surviving family members are brothers John (Becky), Matthew, Michael; niece Olivia and nephews Sam and Ben; cousin Richard Hornaday Jr. and mother Kathi. Joe's absence will be deeply felt by all who were lucky to have known him. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, May 22 at Overton Funeral home in Indianola.
