Services for John Harold Vermace, 82, who passed away Saturday, July 5, 2025 under hospice care at the Indianola Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home, will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 11, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church with burial following in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines.

John was born in Mt Pleasant, Iowa to Charles and Anna Mae Vermace on July 11th, 1942. He was the youngest of three and was a twin.  He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1962, where he participated in several sports. After graduation he enlisted in the military where he served until he was honorably discharged in 1969.

He was united in marriage on September 17th, 1976, to Patricia Walker at Linn Grove United Methodist Church, in Prole, Iowa. Together they raised two children, Michael and Fayth. In 2000, they moved to Indianola to a larger house in a smaller community. John enjoyed fishing and bowling in his younger years. He loved camping and being a grandfather to his five grandchildren.

The past seven years he roamed the halls of Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home becoming friends with many residents and staff. He was friendly and brought smiles to many.  John was an active Bingo player collecting a very large amount of Bingo Coins.

He is survived by his children, Micheal (Heidi) Vermace and Fayth (Shane) Day; grandchildren, Cole, Alie (Anthony), Parker, Madalyn, Raelyn and great grandchild Autumn; siblings, Karl Vermace and Anna Mary Alliss. He was preceded in death by wife Patricia Vermace, his father, Charles Vermace, and mother, Anna Mae Vermace

Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 10, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Memorials in memory of John can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
