Obituary

John "J.W./Cowboy" Cowan of Indianola passed away on May 10, 2010 at the Mercy Hospice Center in Johnston, Iowa.  Funeral services will be held on May 15, 2010 at the First United Methodist Church, Indianola, Iowa at 11:00 am.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to service.  Burial service will be held at 3:30 pm, Saturday,  in  Putnam County  Missouri at the Lone Pine Cemetery.

John William Cowan, son of Chester and Ercel Cowan, was born at his grandmother's home, Rose Shaw, in Livonia, Putnam County , Missouri on November 3, 1934.  He graduated from Kirksville High School in 1952 and the University of Missouri, Columbia with a BS in Agriculture 1957.  John served in the US Army from August 13, 1957 until August 12, 1959.

In Audubon , Iowa he met and married his beloved wife Deborah Carol Janes on May 28, 1967

For several years John and Deborah lived in Mitchell, South Dakota where he worked for Talbot-Carlson Feeds.      Following their move to Indianola, he worked for Vanderpool Construction Co. as a truck driver.

John was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Indianola.  John was also a member of  the American Quarter  Horse Association and  Warren County Saddle Club.   A true passion of his was riding and showing his horses.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and sister, Ida Juanita Scott.

On May  10, 2010, John passed away of complications from a long hospital stay.   At the time of death he was at Mercy Hospice Center in Johnston, Iowa. He was 75 years , 6 months and 7days.

John is survived by his nephew, James Scott and wife Alice. Great nephew, Dr. Bradley Scott and fiancée,  Jamie Nolkemper, Great Nieces, Stephanie Scott and fiancé Erik Sisel and Marlene Gutzmer and husband Tim Gutzmer.
