Funeral service for Jerry C. DeLay, 72, who died Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston following a courageous year long battle with cancer, will be held 2 p.m., Monday, June 20 at Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Indianola. Jerry Compton DeLay was born January 12, 1939, in Shannon City, Iowa to Raymond Washington DeLay and Mildred Etta Compton DeLay. He graduated from New Virginia High School and Simpson College. He spent many years in the crop insurance business working in all levels of the industry and serving on many committees during this time. He also found great pleasure in being an active participant in farming the land he so loved. He leaves a legacy of protecting the land to his family. Jerry's greatest joy was his family who survive him; wife, Nancy; sons, Jason (Kim) of rural Milo, IA and Jerod (Sarah) of Cheyenne, WY; grandchildren, Jacob and Justin DeLay of rural Milo, IA and Isabel and Adalyn DeLay of Cheyenne, WY; sisters Barbara (Lee) McCormick of Iowa City, IA, Janice (Jerry) Spellman of Granger, IA; brother Roger (Karen) DeLay of Ringoes, NJ; sisters-in-law, Barbara DeLay of Perry, IA, Sue DeLay of Aiken, SC and Sidney (Gary) Kirkpatrick of Madrid, IA; mother-in-law Jean Eaton of Indianola, IA and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jack and Robert; sister, Shirley Baird; niece Lori DeLay; brother-in-law Bob Rockey and father-in-law Bob Eaton. Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m., Sunday, June 19 at Trinity United Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family in his name for an agriculture scholarship to be established at a later date.
