Surrounded by her family, Janice Marie Croat, a loving wife and mother, went home to be with her Lord on October 9, 2026, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Janice was born to Lester and Hazel Bentley on June 11, 1965, in Cresco, Iowa. She lost her father at a young age, and her stepfather, William Walker, lovingly became her dad. Janice grew up in Cresco and, following high school, attended the American Institute of Business and Simpson College, where she earned her degree in accounting.
Janice built a rewarding career in finance, working in both the insurance and publishing industries. She spent the final 27 years of her career with People Inc., formerly Meredith Corporation, before retiring.
Janice and her husband, Randall, were married in 1997. Together, they built a life centered around their family and faith and were blessed with two children, Grant and Grace, who were the true joys of her life.
Family was Janice's greatest passion. She treasured special dinners together, family vacations, game nights, and especially a good game of Hearts. She found great joy in preparing for Christmas—not only in the traditions and excitement of the season, but most of all in seeing the happiness on her children's faces on Christmas morning. She especially loved the annual Christmas games that brought family and laughter together.
Janice also cherished the friendships she made throughout her life. For many years, she looked forward to monthly Bunco Girl nights with a special group of friends. Those evenings were filled with laughter, friendship, and memories that she held dear.
Janice will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Randall; son, Grant (Catie) Croat; daughter, Grace Croat; stepson, Chad Croat; stepdaughter, Aubrey (Joey) Harris; four step-grandchildren; sisters, Shirley (Dave) Sovereign and Jane (John) Gadow; brother-in-law, Gary Platz; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lester Bentley; mother, Hazel Walker; stepfather, William Walker; and sister, Linda Platz.
Janice's faith was an important part of her life, and she found comfort in knowing that she was going home to be with her Lord. Her greatest legacy is the love she gave so freely to her family and friends. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family or to the Pink Tractor Foundation.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, October 19, 2026 at Lutheran Church of Hope West Des Moines. Visitation will be prior to services from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church with a luncheon to follow. A private family graveside service will be in the St. Marys Cemetery, St. Marys, Iowa.
