JAMES K. SUMMITT
Indianola
James K. Summitt, son of James and Marie (Goldapp) Summitt, was born on September 22, 1925, in Council Bluffs, IA. He graduated from Oakland High School in May 1943. He enlisted in the United States Navy Air Corps July 1, 1943 and served as a radioman during WWII. He attended Iowa State for engineering but spent his career in the funeral profession.
He was united in marriage to Madeline Thomas in 1948. They lived in Kansas City, then moved to Iowa where they resided in Maxwell, IA and operated Coopers Funeral Home and Furniture Store. In 1970, they moved to Bancroft, IA where they owned and operated Garry-Summitt Furniture. They retired in 1992 and moved to Indianola in 2002. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Indianola.
Jim was always active in whatever community he lived in, serving on various boards and committees. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Madeline. He is survived by his sister, Shirley Hansen, of Arnolds Park, IA; his three sons, Alan of Warroad, MN, Thomas (Ann) of Pella, IA, and Roger (Joni) of Urbandale, IA; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and various nieces and nephews.
Services will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 29 at the First United Methodist Church in Indianola. Graveside services will be held 1:30 p.m., Wednesday in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Oakland, IA. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 28 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Indianola First United Methodist Church, HCI services or sent to the family.
