Obituary

James (Jim) Richard Phillips, 82, of Sandyville, passed away Friday, July 21, 2023 in Knoxville. Funeral Services will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, July 28 at Overton Funeral Home. Visitation will be held 4 to 7 p.m., prior to services at the funeral home. Cremation will follow services with inurnment to be held at a later date in the Sandyville Cemetery, Sandyville, IA.

James was born December 17, 1940 in Sandyville, Iowa. He was the son of Albert and Ruth Phillips.

He retired from Armstrong Tire and Rubber then he worked at Hershel. After this he owned the salvage yard in Sandyville and worked alongside his grandson, Chad. He enjoyed camping, racing, sprint car races, and assisted with welding at Knoxville Raceway. He also enjoyed spending time with his family. He had a heart of gold and was always telling jokes.

James is survived by his wife, Esther; his children Teresa (Corky) James, Corky Ray, and Sandy Boucher, Rose (Roger) Chad, Clay Gillson, Ruth (Chris) Phillip, Mina, Renji, Fox Harmison; 9 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren. His sister Mabel Wood, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Ruth; siblings, Janet Allen, Donnie Phillips, Chuck Phillips.

The family would like to thank Knoxville Hospital and Clinics, Mercy Hospital, and St. Croix Hospice for the care that they provided to James. The family would also like to thank Jamie Connett and Chad Gillson for offering their home and providing excellent care.
