J. LeRoy Mathes, 61, was born to Robert E. and Dora B. Mathes on August 14, 1953 in Iowa City, Iowa. LeRoy and brother Dennis became foster sons to Vincent and Marian Pemble. Given a loving home, he was employed by Pembles Orchard and Pembles Hardware store most of his life. It was here that he became very well known in the Indianola community. LeRoy was an avid fisherman and dedicated booster of the Indianola High School basketball, football and volleyball teams. He also was a dedicated fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Iowa and Iowa State football and basketball teams. He definitely was an arm chair coach. After a short illness, LeRoy died Monday, June 22, 2015. He will be deeply missed by friends and family but his spirit will live forever in our hearts and minds. He leaves behind two sisters, Lynda Shattuck of Albia and Ella (Steve) Hansen of Virginia; brother, Dennis (Kathy) Mathes of Indianola; niece, Christine (Donald) Lebo of Virginia; nephew, Scott (Laura) Hansen of South Carolina; and several grand nieces and nephews and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Dora Mathes and his foster parents Vincent and Marian Pemble. Private family services will be held at a later date.
