James Iver Kolsto… Jimmy Canton…. Soldier, Husband, Dad, Grandpa, Colleague, Friend, Hero… whatever title or signature you assigned to this man his unique character, patience and selflessness made you want to know him better and win his approval to be in the elite group of people he called friend or family.

If someone were to be asked, "Who was Jim Kolsto? certain themes would be universal: courageous, strong, well respected, honest, generous, – maybe "a guy who REALLY liked seafood"? But above all, humble.

If you met Jim somewhere along his 43-year career, as a mechanic, performer and stuntman you would say he was fearless and an innovator who pushed the limits of skill, machine, and imagination to prove that with him behind the wheel, impossible things were possible.

If you crossed paths with Jim after he "retired" from performing you were most likely on the road. He would be driving, exploring, getting things from here to there and/or helping someone in need.

If you were lucky enough to be in the group of people he considered a friend, the story line of his character softens a bit, loyal, dedicated and caring – a guy that would do ANYTHING for you, no questions asked.

But above and beyond all Jim was a family man. His grandchildren his stars, his daughters- Kelley, Kindra and Kerri his world. And Shirley, his wife of 59 years his sun and moon.

He will be missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Kelley (Dave) Weihs, Kindra (Norm) Olson, Kerri (Ben) Clark; 10 grandchildren; sister, J'Andrea Gibney. He was preceded in death by parents, Martin and Alma;  brother, Jack.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Iowa INC., 1441 Pleasant St, Des Moines, IA 50314.
