Obituary

Services for James Edward Frank, 85, who passed away Monday, October 14, 2024, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the IOOF Cemetery, Indianola.

Jim was born, September 10, 1939, on the farm where he lived the majority of his life. Growing up he was the youngest of 4 children and he began his farming career at the age of 15 when his father passed away. After high school he attended Simpson College and enlisted in the Army reserves. Upon completion of college and his military career he returned to farming and had various other jobs throughout his life that included John Deere, Ford Tractor, Pioneer Seed Company, driving school bus for Southeast Warren, working as a bartender at Rudy's Rendezvous, AC Supply and many years with Toyota of Des Moines as a shuttle driver. Despite all these great work experiences outside of the farm, his heart was in farming. He loved his cows and spent a great deal of time tending them. And when he had grandchildren, you could often find him taking them out to the pasture to sit and talk with the cows.

Jim met Jeanie, his first wife, whom he married November 11, 1967, through mutual friends while he was at Simpson College. They enjoyed 40 wonderful years together and they loved music, dancing, spending time with friends and spending time on the farm. Jim was a loving and kind father who you could often find at his kids' events including running the clock at football games, attending a band or vocal concert or any other SEW activity. Jim also was a longtime member of Green Plain United Methodist Church. Some of his favorite pastimes included attending races at Knoxville Raceway. These later years he has greatly enjoyed being a member of the Liberty Center American Legion.

Nothing made Jim prouder and led to as much joy as when he became a grandfather. Jim, known as Grandpa and Bop, was the best Grandpa at coloring, playing games, puzzles or enjoying a little Wii Dance. He was a coloring master, teaching both his children and then grandchildren that the only way to color was to start by outlining!

After giving her many courtesy rides from Toyota, Jim then married Marjean Schulz of Ankeny, Iowa on August 3, 2013. They enjoyed the first 7 years together maintaining Evergreen Farm including landscaping, raising calves, remodeling the grain bin and having morning coffee on the deck. While it was tough to leave the farm, having been the only place he lived, Jim eventually settled into city life in Ankeny.

Jim enjoyed vacationing with Marjean including trips to Branson, New York, Texas, Tennessee, Europe, Alaska and yearly college grandkid visits. He was able to see 24 Freedom rocks throughout Iowa. Jim was often found cheering for all the local sports and racing teams – it didn't matter if it was high school, college, football, basketball or sprint cars; he loved it all! Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren attending their many activities. Jim was very thankful to have just seen so many family and friends while celebrating his 85th birthday!

Jim will be greatly missed by all, but always remembered for his blue eyes, his kind and warm smile, and his sense of humor.

Jim is survived by his wife, Marjean; children, Cory (Kim) Frank, Darci (Kevin) Petersen, Kyle (Erica) Schulz, Korey (Jennifer) Schulz, Kristin (Bob) Callahan; grandchildren, Lucas Petersen, Ella Schulz, Carson Schulz, Hudson Frank, Ava Callahan, Reagan Schulz, Lydia Callahan, Kelci Petersen, Finley Schulz, Emily Simpson, Alice Callahan, Stephen Frank; sisters-in-law, Virginia Frank, Karen Schwarz; many nieces, nephews and other family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanie; parents, John Walton and Anna Frank; siblings, Herbert (Lanise) Frank, Richard Frank, Mary Ann (Raymond) Gebhardt.
