Obituary

James Larry Carter, 61, died suddenly on December 14, 2007.

Visitation will be held 3 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, December 18 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola where family will be present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

A celebration of his life will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 19th at Overton Funeral Home with burial in the New Virginia Cemetery.

Larry was born in Etowah, Arkansas on April 22, 1946 to Grady and Pearl (Jackson) Carter. He was the oldest of four children; Alton (Elaine) Carter, Stephen (Debbie) Carter and Stanley Carter.

Larry served in the Air Force from 1965 to 1968, when he was honorably discharged.  He went on to be a successful business owner of two companies, JC's Auto Stores in Des Moines and ACE Distributing in Sioux City.  In 1991, he retired and in 1993 he moved with his wife to his dream home to live in the quiet of his 'farm' near Medora.

Larry loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren in activities such as fishing off the dock of his pond.  His dream was to play catcher for the Detroit Tigers.  He was invited to join their farm team upon completion of his tour of duty in the Air Force.  Due to an accident while serving he was unable to realize his dream.  He kept this dream alive by coaching his son's team and watching his Tigers every chance he could.  For many years he raced drag cars and in recent years loved to spend time in his barn and 'tinker' with anything mechanical.

Larry is survived by his wife of fourteen years, Cindy, his step mother, Lorene Carter, his siblings, two children, Cara (Tim) Hulick, James (Jimmy) Carter, Jr., two stepchildren, Mindie (Randy) Hommer and Todd (Lisa) Mealey.  His four grandchildren Kailey, Morgan, Kassie and Samantha will miss him dearly.

Memorial contributions may be given to the New Virginia Fire and Rescue in his name.
