JAMES M. BENDER Indianola Services for James M. Bender, 72, who passed away, Sunday, August 25, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 28 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens Cemetery. James Marvin Bender was born on Friday the 13th, September 1940 in Lenox, Iowa to parents Rollie and Marcia (Barber) Bender. He farmed with his dad, assisted at the Bender Funeral Home and worked driving a fork lift for Tote Industries in Lenox for 20 years. He enjoyed raising and showing quarter horses and was a member of the Taylor County Sheriff's Posse. He raised two sons and two daughters, but his heart was so big that in 1982 he married Marilyn Wood and her two children. He loved to hunt and enjoyed camping and trail riding. . . first with horses, and Marilyn reluctantly converted him to a mule lover! If anyone mentioned "taking a trip" Jim always said it would take him 15 minutes to be ready. Unforgettable trips included a cruise (and he hated water), Switzerland and Hawaii. He rode the Cross Country Trail Ride in Eminence, Missouri for 24 years and trail rode in Kentucky, Tennessee, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Illinois. . . and the South Texas Trail Ride/Wagon Train. After moving back to Indianola in 1984, Jim worked at Emco Industries in Des Moines until retirement when he drove a delivery truck part time for O'Reilly Auto. Left to miss Jim are his wife, Marilyn; children, Ron (Phyllis) Bender, Barb (Tim) Gerber, Diane Stoddard, David Bender, Teresa Knapp and Andy Wood; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, Thomas (Deb) Bender; and sister, Terri Bender. Proceeding him in death were his parents and granddaughter Jessica Wood. Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, August 27 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. to greet friends. Memorials may be given to Kiya Koda Humane Society in Indianola. Online condolences may be made at www.overtonfunerals.com.
