Memorial services for Irene M. Houghtaling, 81, who passed away Friday, August 13, 2010 after a long battle with cancer, will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, August 21at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola.

Irene was born March 10, 1929 to Gerhart Henry Hans and Anna Jurgensen. She was united in marriage to James Houghtaling in 1949. To this union four children were born, James (Kathy) of Colorado; John of Des Moines, Janis (Tom) Barr of Carlisle, and Jeff (Wendy) of Colorado. She is also survived by three sisters, Louise (Roy) Wells of Oregon, Lucy (Herman) Clark of Altoona, and Patsy (Dennis) Radtke of Wisconsin; two brothers, Bill Jurgensen of Winterset and Robert (Grace) Jurgensen of Oregon; sister-in-law, Ruth Ellen Riley of Washington; step sister-in-law, Jean Labertew of Indianola; 8 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; two sisters; and two brothers.

Irene was a homemaker and reupholstered in her home for 22 years. She loved to play cards, golf, bowl and was an avid mushroom hunter. She was a long time friend of Jack Robuck of Indianola and a member of Ackworth Friends Church.
