Obituary

Ilo Eveland was born May 11, 1929 to Wilson and Lucy Burns at their farm home southwest of Indianola. She was the youngest sibling to her four brothers; George age 17, Clark 15, Wayne 11 and Carl 3. She grew up to be very close to Carl. She grew up on the family farm, learning to love horses, especially her pony, Jack, and her puppy Freddie. She remembers riding into town with her dad and Carl for the new county courthouse dedication in 1939. She graduated from Indianola High School in 1947. She attended Simpson for 3 years receiving a teaching certificate.  Shortly before or after High School graduation she met Keith Pegram from Carlisle. They married in August of 1948. They made their first home in the married student housing dorms, where Cowles Athletic Center now stands. She taught school for one year at a country school outside of Indianola, while Keith finished his last year at Simpson.

They moved to Wesley Iowa in 1951, where they both taught school and Keith coached. Their son Brad was born there in 1953. They moved back to Indianola and Keith had several teaching jobs in the area before being diagnosed with a benign brain tumor that had been causing him severe headaches. The resultant surgery left him a paraplegic. The family moved to Phoenix, Arizona summer of 1958 to benefit Keith's health. Keith passed away in December of 1961 after contracting meningitis.

Ilo met Harris Eveland at their church the following spring. She and Harris began dating, which included many outings with his motorboat at Saguaro Lake. Brad enjoyed these outings too, learning to water ski as did Ilo. Harris and Ilo married in January 1963. Brad was their ring bearer.

The new family, which now included Harris' daughter Kathy, moved back to Ilo's family farm in the summer of 1964 to help with the care of her mother. It was there that their son Lance was born in 1965. After Ilo's mother needed nursing home care, the family moved into Indianola to make their home on South Howard Street.

After raising her family, Ilo worked as a teacher's aide at Irving school, cleaning homes, taking care of her grandchildren, as well as being a full-time homemaker. She loved to bake and loved nothing better than to share her baked goods with her friends and family.

After returning to Iowa, Ilo also renewed her connection to her childhood church west of Indianola, Center Chapel. She and Harris dedicated countless hours of their time there during their life together and enjoyed the company of their congregation.

They also volunteered many hours to the Warren County Historical Society, FISH, Meals on Wheels, and enjoyed serving as groundkeepers for many years at the Indianola Little League.

After their retirement, Harris and Ilo enjoyed spending winters in Phoenix again, first with their 5th wheel camper, and eventually at their home in Carriage Manor retirement community in Mesa. They enjoyed the warm weather there, as well as the many new friends they came to know and love. They celebrated their 50th anniversary there in January 2013.

After Harris' death in 2014, Ilo moved back to Indianola full time. In 2018 she moved into The Village retirement center in Indianola.

Ilo passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at The Village, in Indianola. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday May 18, 2024 at Center Chapel United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends from 10 to 11 a.m., prior to the service. There will be a private service for the inurnment of cremains at Hewett Cemetery, rural Indianola.

She was preceded in death by both of her loving husbands, Keith and Harris; both of her parents, Wilson and Lucy; and her four brothers.
