A visitation will be held from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., Friday, December 29 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola where family will be present to greet friends. A Memorial service will follow at 7:30 p.m. He was cremated in accordance to his wishes, and a private burial for the family will be held at a later time.
Crow was born July 27th, 1931 to Hugh Hornaday and Olive McCormick Hornaday. He graduated from Indianola High School in 1949 and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953. Upon returning home, he attended Simpson College in Indianola on the GI bill. He was a member of the Kappa Theta Psi Fraternity, played football, tennis and was inducted into the Simpson Football Hall of Fame in 1979. He was also an avid tennis player. He was very loyal to the community, Simpson College and his friends and loved gardening/flowers, birds, and was very interested in the inner-workings of high school, college and pro sports. He attended the Drake Relays for many years until his eyesight failed. He and his family enjoyed attending his AT&M Army platoon reunions every year. He was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking for his family and Michael's numerous friends. He was well-known for his honesty, wisdom, loving nature and integrity.
Crow was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Olive Hornaday; half-brother, Guy Hornaday; and half-sister, Helen Allen.
He is survived by his wife, Kathi; sons, John (Becky) of Orlando, FL, Joseph of Beaverdale, Matthew of Iowa City and Michael of Des Moines. He is also survived by his brother, Dick of Indianola and Nephew Richard Hornaday, Jr. of Mt Vernon, MI. He has three wonderful grandchildren, Benjamin, Samuel and Olivia. Crow is also survived by many friends whom he considered family.
A special thanks goes to all his friends who visited him during his illness, to Dr. Norma Hirsch and the wonderful staff at Kavanagh House Hospice on 56th Street; and to BJ and Ron Giudicessi and Joe Strako. Memorials may be designated to the family in his name.
