Hubert, the son of Adolph and Blanche (McCown) Zobrist was born July 3, 1916 in Hancock, Iowa. Hubert was active in sports and other school activities and graduated from Hancock High School in 1933. Following high school, Hubert and his friends traveled across the United States working the harvest fields. He and his cousin, Dick McKinney, started a grain and livestock trucking company in 1938. In January of 1942, Hubert enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served during WWII in Iceland and Europe as a member of the 33rd Fighter Squadron.
Hubert was united in marriage to Lois Bintz, the girl next door, on December 5, 1946. They were the parents of four children; Patty, Mary, Leslie and Lou Ann. Hubert farmed and owned and operated Zobrist Trucking Service for 28 years. He sold the trucking business and worked as an inspector for the Iowa Department of Agriculture from 1972 until his retirement in 1988. He continued to farm, raise livestock and work for various businesses in Hancock many years after retiring.
He was a Lay Pastor for his church and served in leadership roles for many civic and community organizations such as the school board, Volunteer Fire Department and the American Legion. Hubert and Lois traveled to Europe, Alaska and many other destinations, however, most trips were to visit family and friends and be there especially in times of need. They loved gardening, fishing, traveling and spoiling their grandchildren. They followed their family's activities and were recognized as Avo-Ha Schools Number 1 Fans in 1994. Hubert will long be remembered for his humor, kindness and gentle smile.
Hubert was preceded in death by his wife Lois and his parents.
He leaves many fond memories with his children, Patty and husband, Dr. Gary Johnson of Atlantic, Mary and husband, George Wendelin of West Des Moines, Les Zobrist and wife, Sheila of Spencer, and Lou Ann and husband, Jay Niemann of Indianola; 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley and husband, Norman Leed of Hancock; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church, where the family will be present to greet friends. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hancock United Methodist Church.
