Hazel Jeannette Vickroy died July 15, 2008 at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines, Iowa. Hazel, the daughter of Hugh and Ellen Douglas was born on April 2, 1918 in the village of Cool, Iowa as a dual citizen of the United States and Ireland. She was married to Ellis Owen Vickroy on February 23, 1936. She spent most of her life in Squaw Township, Warren County before moving to Prairie City in 1997. Hazel was the Warren County Spelling Bee champion in the eighth grade and still enjoyed Scrabble, Wheel of Fortune, and cross word puzzles. She was a creative and prolific quilter who fashioned over 100 quilts, all of which she gave away to family and friends. As a cook, she was well known for her white bread, yellow cake, jams, and sweet pickles. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, parents, four sisters, five brothers, two daughters, Marilyn Louise Bigger and Wanda Marie Vickroy and two sons, Leonard "Doc" Dean Vickroy and Cecil LeRoy Vickroy. She is survived by four sons; Fay of Sun City, Arizona, Gail, Alvin (Mary Anne), Lyle (Joyce), and Dennis (Cheryl) of Indianola, four daughters; Catherine Stout of Prairie City, Judy (Dave) White of Altoona, Connie (Steve) Benge of Winterset, and Vera Terry of Pleasant Hill, twenty seven grandchildren, four step grandchildren and fifty six great grandchildren.
Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 19 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the Shaver Cemetery, rural Warren County, Iowa. Visitation will be held 3 – 8 p.m., Friday, July 18 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends from 5:30 – 8 p.m. Memorials may be given to Jasper County Congregate Meals.
