Cemetery. Visitation will be held 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, November 22 at Overton Funeral Home, with family present to greet friends. Hazel was born near Ackworth, IA on May 7, 1918 to Harley A. and Addie Wellons VanSyoc. She attended the McClellan Rural school near Milo, IA and Milo High School. She graduated from Simpson College in 1939, after which she taught mathematics and other related subjects at Macksburg, IA and Beech, IA. She was married to Harold E. Threlkeld on December 9, 1939. Since women could not teach if married, Hazel had to keep her marriage "secret" until the spring of 1942. She returned to full-time teaching in the fall of 1959 in Indianola, retiring in the spring of 1977. Many of her former students have kept contact with her through the years, both socially and professionally. After Harold's death in 1982, Hazel married Gerald Sutton on April 28, 1984. Gerald died in 1998, and Hazel moved to an apartment at The Village in May of 1999. In October, 2009, she moved to the care center at The Village. Hazel was an active member of WCTU, Christian Women's Club, AAUW, Delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Society, Clio Club, Warren County Historical Society, First United Methodist Church and the Retired Indianola Junior High Group. Hazel is survived by her daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Terry) Pratt, of Mitchellville, IA; grandson, Daniel R. (Lea) Goodrich of Indianola; step-son, Dale (Betsy) Sutton of Cibolo, TX; brother, W. Bryce VanSyoc of Indianola; two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 43 years, Harold E. Threlkeld; second husband of 14 years, Gerald E. Sutton; brothers, Larry, Cecil, Marvin, Stanley, James and Willard VanSyoc; and sisters, Bertine, Gerry, Edna and E. Louise. The family wishes to acknowledge all the love and support from relatives, friends, and the employees at The Village. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to The Good Shepherd Fund at The Village, 1203 North E. Street, Indianola, IA 50125 or the First United Methodist Church, PO Box 258, Indianola, IA 50125.
