Obituary

Harold Ernest Roe was born to Henry "Virgil" and Lesta Roe, on November 21st, 1934, at his grandparents' home in Puckerbrush, Iowa. He attended Primrose Country School, Norwood Elementary, and Lacona Junior High and High School. He played baseball for Lacona High School, where he graduated in 1953.

He married the love of his life, Beverly Jean Fry May 31, 1958, and to this union 3 children were born, Marlene (Bert) Halterman, of Martensdale, Joanie (Brad) Chilton of Bloomfield, and David (Amy) Roe of Ankeny. He made a commitment to Christ many years ago and was a faithful and committed husband and father.

Harold enlisted in the United States Army in 1957 and served as a lineman in Germany through 1959. He was awarded Marksman badge for rifle and reached Expert level in carbine weapons, earning him the Carbine Bar.

Harold worked as a laborer at Solar Aircraft, Armstrong and Firestone before pursuing his passion of building houses. Through the years he, Bev, and a few helpers built 19 houses, 2 4-plexes, and he poured curb and gutter for Walnut Drive in Martensdale. He served on Martensdale's town council and served as mayor pro-tem. He was a long-term member of Indianola First Assembly of God Church, where he served on the board.

In his later years, Harold enjoyed following the Martensdale Blue Devils' sports teams–especially the baseball team. He also enjoyed hosting foreign exchange students and visits with his grandchildren.

For the past 3 years Harold has been a resident of Vista Woods Care Center, Ottumwa, where he enjoyed singing with and to staff. He often expressed gratitude to the care center staff who were very good to him.

Preceding him in death were his wife, parents, in-laws, Orville Fry, Josephine and John Putney, his sister, Connie Bryant. Surviving are his children, 10 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren.

Harold passed away Thursday, October 23, 2025 in Ottumwa, Iowa at the age of 90.  Services will be held 10 a.m., Saturday, November 1, 2025 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with the visitation to be held prior to services from 9 to 10 a.m.  Burial will follow services in the Norwood Cemetery, Lucas, Iowa.  Memorials in memory of Harold may be given to World Missions at the Indianola First Assembly of God Church.
