Obituary

Harold Lee Culbertson passed away on Thursday, July 30 at the VA Community Living Center in Des Moines at the age of 83 from ALS (Lou Gerig's disease). Harold was born on July 12, 1932 to Ardys and Winona (Williams) Culbertson in Lucas County, IA. He was the fourth child in a family of two sons and five daughters. He attended school in Lucas County, graduating in 1951 from Derby High School. A Veteran of the Korean War, he was inducted into the United States Army in January 1953, serving for nearly two years. Harold married Mary Avanelle Snodgrass on September 3, 1955. At their last anniversary Mary and Harold celebrated 55 years of marriage. Harold and Mary began their married life in Des Moines, and then moved back to Lucas County to raise their family. The family lived near Lucas, IA before moving to Indianola in 1977. He made his career in Des Moines as a tool and die maker, retiring at age 65. He enjoyed his small farm raising Arabian Horses, working with wood, traveling and spending time with his large family and many friends. He is survived by his children, Rick (Pamela) Culbertson of Des Moines, Chuck (Kathy) Culbertson of New Virginia, Terri (Bradley) Sterk of Johnston, and Steve (Becky) Culbertson of Lee's Summit, MO; eight grandchildren, Megan and Jon Culbertson, Heather (Ross) Dix and Bret (Kristina) Culbertson, Jacob and Katie Sterk, and Lauren and Lindsay Culbertson; six great-grandchildren, Kaden, Roman, Makiya, Rylan, Rayleigh and Ellia; three sisters, Marge DeBok, Norma Porter and Geri (Gene) Snodgrass; three brothers in-law, Jim (Helen) Snodgrass, Gene (Geri) Snodgrass, Don Snodgrass; a sister-in-law, Maxine Pennington; and numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; parents; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Lois and Guy Stalter, Violet and Gerald Halferty, Roger DeBok and Gerald Porter; his brother, Glen Culbertson; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Helen and Kenneth Marker, Marilyn Snodgrass, and Joe Pennington. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, August 4 at Indianola Regular Baptist Church in Indianola, IA with burial at Norwood Cemetery in Lucas County, IA. Visitation will be held Monday, August 3 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola from 5 to 8 p.m. with family present to greet friends. The family wishes to thank Dr. Debra Benjamin and the staff at the VA CLC for the compassionate care provided to our dad, grandpa and brother.
