H. Merle (Doc) Nyswonger Indianola Longtime Indianola farmer Doc Nyswonger was born on April 29, 1922, and passed into eternal life at The Village Care Center on December 6, 2013, at the age of 91. Doc was the seventh of eight children born to Tyler and Maude Nyswonger. On November 14, 1944, Doc married the love of his life, Betty Darlene Streeter, and together they celebrated 69 years of marriage. Drafted into the Navy in 1945, Doc became a member of the Seabees Specialty Force and spent his time helping rebuild parts of destroyed Japan. Returning to the states meant farming the rich Warren County soil and raising three daughters: Susan, Shelley (Dennis), and Deb (Tom). After his retirement Doc was active in Gideons International, serving as the local county jail representative, stopping weekly to offer New Testaments to the inmates. Doc is survived by his wife, daughters, nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, a brother, Oland (Wayne), a sister Anna Marie Ruble, and two sisters-in-law, Jean Nyswonger and Jerry Nyswonger. He was preceded in death by brothers Duane, Marvin, and Bill, and sisters Lois and Audrey. Visitation for Doc will be at Overton Funeral Home on Sunday, December 8, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with services 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 9 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola.
