Obituary

Funeral services for Grace L. Overton, 86, who died Monday, May 9, 2005, at The Village Healthcare Center in Indianola, will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 13, at Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Indianola. Interment will be in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Grace was born in Carrollton, Iowa. She graduated from Glidden High School in 1936 and continued her education at Simpson College from 1937 – 1940, with a major in business. With her husband Everett, Grace had shared for more than 50 years in the management and services of Overton Funeral Home until their joint retirement in 1993. She continued to be active in the operation of the family farm near Milo. She had been a member of the Simpson College Board of Trustees, 1971-1990, serving as board secretary for five years and the chairperson of Simpson's Quasquincentennial Committee during 1985-86. Grace and her husband had received the Simpson College Award for Distinguished Community Service and the Alumni Achievement Award. She was a member of Trinity United Presbyterian Church, Chapter BP of P.E.O., Delta Delta Delta and Simpson Guild. She had served as an ordained elder and as the president of Presbyterian Women. Grace enjoyed homemaking, entertaining, grandparenting, reading, and playing bridge. During her later years, Grace learned computer skills and enjoyed many hours emailing and continuing her passion of writing. Her email address of "cinroll" attests to the thousands of cinnamon rolls she shared with others.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband Everett E. Overton in November, 2002. Married in 1941, they had celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in March, 2001.

She is survived by two sons, John (Barbara) of Indianola and Roger (Roxanne) of Onalaska, WI; two daughters, Joan of Indianola and Jean (Joe) Stock of Wallingford, PA; six grandchildren, Bruce (Sable) of Las Vegas, NV, Julie Overton of McKinney, TX, Jennifer (Todd) Gjervold of NYC, NY, Derek (Jen) of Indianola, Sarah Stock, NYC, NY, and Grace Overton of LaCrosse, WI; and three great-grandsons, Lee, Christopher, and Jackson. She is also survived by her brother, Bruce (Alice) Annear of Mesa, AZ; a sister-in-law, Elma Wilcox of Perry, IA; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
