IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gloria Jean
Henry
May 1, 1931 – July 18, 2023
Gloria Jean Henry, 92, of Indianola, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at Westview Care Center in Indianola. Burial will take place in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Gloria's passion was her garden. Here she found the joy of watching things grow
and become a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes surrounding her home. Her Hosta Garden was on the National Register of Hosta's in the world. She was so proud of that. She even had a variety smuggled from Germany called Rheingold.
She visited famous gardens in Germany, France, England and the Netherlands and all over the United States. For years, she organized bus tours, revolving around gardening for her garden club in Iowa City.
She was the consummate event, planner, and organizer. She planned family reunions that always focused on special activities for her grandchildren. One year she had small cakes decorated with the current interest of each grandchild for a combined birthday celebration. Never one to shy away from a challenge, one summer, she hosted the band members and families, 18 in all, for Martin's German Dixieland Band and the Red Main Ramblers. She introduced them to Iowa, sweet corn, apple pies, and homemade ice cream.
In addition to gardening, she was a 4H leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout leader, and Sunday School teacher. She organized trash pickups alongside of the road to the sound of moans and groans from her various groups. It is hard to imagine that any of the children she led on the trash pickups ever threw out a piece of trash from a car later in life!
She nurtured her four children with love, attention and patience, attending countless school plays and band concerts, and continued that support throughout
her life. She was also a huge Iowa Hawkeye fan, (even though she and Harvey attended Iowa State!) Cheering on the Hawks as well as the Chicago Bears and Blackhawks gave her many entertaining hours.
Gloria is survived by her children, Marsha Deane and Martin Henry; grandchildren, Henry Deane, Lydia and spouse Bryan Robinson, Carina Henry, Zach (Jenn) Morton, Drew (Shivhan) Morton, Caitlin (William) Tesch, Monica Morton, and Jenn (Steven) Losiewicz; great-grandchildren, Rowan Morton, Adelynn Tesch, Elizabeth Tesch, Evan Tesch, Sloane Losiewicz, Quinn Losiewicz, Theodore Morton, and Hannah Robinson; sister, Betty Labertew; and many nieces, nephews and other family. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harvey; children, Darrell Henry and Denise Morton; and parents, Charles and Josephine Davis.
