Obituary

Freda Ann King of Indianola was called home to be with her Savior on September 9, 2011 at Good Samaritan Society in Indianola after a courageous fight with complications of a stroke. She was surrounded by her loving family as she made a peaceful passing to her heavenly home. Freda Ann Miller was born in rural Warren County, IA to Henry and Bonnie (Parker) Miller and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1952. Freda retired from US West Communications in 1990 where she was a senior clerk and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Freda married the love of her life and best friend, O.L. "Vern" King on February 14, 1976. They built a new home in rural Prole where they resided for most of their life together. Freda and Vern enjoyed traveling and camping and made many trips to the Big Horn Mountains. They also enjoyed many years of owning and riding horses. Freda and Vern also enjoyed country western dancing with many good friends. They had a love for bluegrass music and made trips to many bluegrass festivals. Freda was an avid genealogist and wrote and published a book on the history of her family and was working on a second. She was a member of the Iowa Genealogical Society and the Warren County Genealogical Society. Freda will long be remembered by her large, extended family for the hand knitted Christmas stockings that she made for each and every one. She knitted a great deal of love into the stockings she made and created many special memories for those who hang them year after year. At last count she had knitted over 120 stockings. Freda was the strength and backbone of her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Freda made it her mission to take care of all who needed her. She was a wonderful caregiver for her husband, Vern, during his battle with Lewy Body Dementia. She was always ready to help someone at a moment's notice. Whether it be a grandchild that needed some sewing done, great-grand-kids that need a babysitter, or making a pan of her famous lasagna and caramel bars and delivering it to a friend in need of a meal. She truly had a servant's heart and served Christ by serving others. She was a member of the loving church family of the First Baptist Church of Norwalk, IA and was devoted to God and her precious savior, Jesus Christ. Freda is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Carl Schnathorst of Indianola, daughter Kathleen Smith-Carper of Indianola, son and daughter-in-law, Pat and Kelly Smith of Indianola, and son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Julie Smith of Urbandale. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Tiffany Fink, Josh Kellow and fiancé Cari Olive and Cory Kellow, Kristen Smith, Jason Smith and wife, Abby, Cody Smith, Austin Smith and fiancé Amanda McCombs, and Carl, Caleb, and Cheyenne Schnathorst She is also survived by her 8 precious great-grandchildren, Trey and Tiernan Fink, Darin, Seth, Jeremiah and Jude Kellow, Kai Smith and Rylee Smith. She is survived by sisters Jan Gamble and husband Don of Oklahoma City, OK, Evelyn Miller of Norwalk and Darlene Williams of West Des Moines.
