Obituary

FREDA L. CAVINESS Indianola Services for Freda (Nine) Caviness, age 91, who passed away Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at The Village Care Center in Indianola, will be held 1:30 p.m., Monday, November 5 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Freda was born in St. Marys, IA August 23, 1921, the daughter of Garfield and Lelia (Lucas) Nine and graduated from St. Marys Consolidated School in 1938. She gave tap dance lessons three years while in high school and started teaching in country schools at age 18. Freda received a two year teaching certification from Simpson College in 1950; a bachelor's degree from Drake University in 1954 and a master's degree in Administration from Drake University in 1956. She taught school 19 years (11 years in rural schools and 8 years in Indianola.) She was the Elementary Principal for Emerson and Hawthorn schools for 28 years. During her 47 year career in education, she received many honors and special recognitions. She held several offices (including President) of both the Iowa and the National Associations of Elementary School Principals and Delta Kappa Gamma. Freda married Gilbert H. Caviness on August 23, 1941 and they had a long and loving relationship for 64 years. She enjoyed traveling and had visited all of the United States plus trips to Canada, the Bahamas, and Mexico. After retiring in 1986, she was able to pursue several hobbies including painting, playing the organ, flower arranging, crafts and volunteer work. She loved entertaining her family especially at Christmas. Freda was a much loved relative, teacher and friend. She will be remembered for her cheerful disposition and positive influences on her students, family and friends. She is survived by her nephew Charles Amos and wife Thelma and Joanne Balzer Amos all of Indianola. She is also survived by her late husband's nieces and nephew, Karla Trotter Beard of Indianola, Merlyn "Bud" Trotter and his wife Ruth of Lincoln, NE and Fonda Trotter Cone and her husband Ed of Turlock, CA; cousins, Betty (Doc) Nyswonger and Shirley Manders of Indianola, and Virginia Bentson of Buenos Aires, Argentina; as well as several great nieces and nephews and many friends. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Gilbert, brother Robert, sister Mildred and brother-in-law Charles Amos, Sr. and nephews Larry Amos and Jerry Beard. Visitation will be held 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, November 4 at Overton Funeral Home, where family will be present to greet friends from 3 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Indianola Public Library.
