Funeral services for Fern Amsberry, 96, who died Sunday, January 9, 2005, at the Westview Care Center in Indianola, will be held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 13, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Graveside services will be held 1:30 p.m., Thursday in the Steamboat Rock Cemetery in Steamboat Rock, Iowa.

Born in Milo, Fern graduated from the High School in 1926, continued her education at Ellsworth Community College and Drake University where she received her undergraduate degree. She moved to Steamboat Rock in 1935 then to Indianola in 1953. Fern was employed with the Indianola Community School District where she loved the kids she taught, retiring in 1973. She was a member of the Indianola Christian Union Church and a 50 year member of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed fishing in Minnesota, watching girls six on six basketball as she attended the Iowa State Girl's High School Basketball Tournament for 66 consecutive years, and watching the Chicago Cubs and Bulls.

Fern is survived by her son, Kent E. Amsberry and wife, Sue of Indianola and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth in 1948; sister, Helene Dollison; and brother, Guy Risinger.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 12, at the funeral home where family will be present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. to greet friends. Memorial contributions may be made to Indianola Dollars for Scholars, Indianola Christian Union Church or the Indianola Public Library.
