Obituary

EVERETT RICHARD HOBBS Indianola Everett Richard Hobbs, 87, of Indianola, formerly of Galesburg, Ill., died December 5, 2011, in Indianola. He was born September 17, 1924, in Wichita, Kansas, to Raymond and May Bell Hobbs. He married Leatrice A. Burket on June 17, 1951, in Wichita. They were divorced in 1981. Surviving are one daughter, Brenda Hobbs Petersen, of Indianola; two sons, Bruce (Laura) Hobbs and Brian Hobbs, all of Norwood, Ohio; one granddaughter, Katelyn Petersen of Indianola; two grandsons, Cody Petersen of Indianola and Thomas Hobbs of Norwood; his former wife, Leatrice Hobbs of Champaign, Illinois.; and two sisters, Donna Peterson and Terry (Jean-Paul) Dusseault, all of Eugene, Oregon. He graduated from Wichita High School East in May 1942, then attended college. He served in the United States Army from May 13, 1943, to January 6, 1946. While assigned to the 357th AAA Searchlight Battalion, he operated a radar-controlled anti-aircraft gun, protecting the English coast. After World War II, he returned to Wichita, later moving to Minneapolis, Minnesota, Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio. In Toledo, he worked for Willys Jeep, later Kaiser Jeep. In 1966, the family moved to Morton, Illinois, where he worked for Caterpillar Tractor Co. In 1970, the family moved to Galesburg, Illinois, where Richard worked at Gale Products Co. and later Gates Rubber Co. He operated Richard Hobbs Data Processing in Galesburg in the 1970s. He continued college studies throughout his career and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from Illinois State University in 1969. He completed his career as a data processing instructor at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg and Spoon River College in Canton, Illinois. After retirement, he spent several years in France, teaching part-time in a technical school. When he returned to the United States, he lived for several years in Atlanta and Savannah, Georgia, moving to Indianola in 2010. He was a former member of Toastmasters International. He was an avid bridge player and also enjoyed crossword puzzles. There will be no local services or visitation. A committal service will be held later at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, IA.
