Obituary

Services for Evelyn Elizabeth Van Syoc Hopper, 97, who passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2024 in Toledo, will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, January 5, 2025 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Visitation will be held 1 to 3 p.m., prior to service at the funeral Home. Graveside Services will be held 2 p.m., Monday, January 6 in the Belmont Cemetery, Rural Milo.

Evelyn was born in Atlantic Iowa and grew up a farm girl, she enjoyed farm life with the animals and natural resources. As a little girl she survived Scarlet Fever. She joined 4-H and enjoyed her projects. She graduated from Atlantic High School and attended Simpson College.

After graduation she became a teacher and taught in several schools in Iowa and later had continuing education at Drake university receiving a master's degree. She met Howard Duane Van Syoc at Simpson and Married "Duane" and lived in Des Moines for a short time before they purchased their home in West Des Moines. They were blessed with sons Britt, born in 1955 and Scott in 1957. She taught 2nd grade at Hanawalt school in Des Moines until her retirement before Duane's passing in 1987.

She purchased a condo in Sun City, Arizona after Duane's passing. She enjoyed wintering in Arizona and the rest of the year in West Des Moines. She later met Garland (Bud) Hopper. She traded her condo in Arizona for a house and then was remarried to Bud in 1995. They enjoyed both houses and shared grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They traveled extensively in the U.S. and Mexico. They always enjoyed when family and friends came to visit them in both of their homes. In April of 2023 they moved into Birkwood Village in Toledo Iowa.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Bud; son, Scott (Sheryl) Van Syoc; Bud's children, Tim (Mo) Hopper, Terry (Jeannie) Hopper, Rick (Jodi) Hopper and Sandy (Donavon) Kleine; granddaughter, Jamie (Dillon Martelli) Van Syoc; great-grandson, Anton Van Syoc; great-granddaughter, Adi Martelli; brother, Lyle Swagel; and numerous step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Duane Van Syoc; son, Britt Van Syoc; sisters, Elaine Sivers, Beverly Swagel.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Animal Rescue League.
