IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Eugene Alvin
Troll
January 24, 1948 – June 18, 2024
Eugene Alvin Troll was born January 24, 1948 in Atlantic, Iowa to Alvin and Lois (Richardson) Troll. He was the oldest of 3 children. He and his sisters were raised on the family farm North of Walnut, where he stayed busy milking cows, tending chickens and helping with the family's large garden. Gene graduated from Walnut High School in 1967. After high school, he attended US Trade School in Kansas City to study diesel mechanics and graduated a year later. He then worked at an implement dealer in Audubon, before being drafted in 1969. In May of 1969, Gene went to Vietnam and was there until November of 1969, when he was wounded. He arrived back in the states on December 4, 1969. He was discharged from the Army in November 1970. Gene received the Vietnam Service Medal and the Purple Heart Medal. After his discharge, he moved back to the family farm and began renting ground from a couple of neighbors. In December 1970, Gene began dating Paula Hospelhorn and they were united in marriage on November 26, 1971. They were blessed with 2 boys; Aric in 1973 and Adam in 1975. Gene found joy in service and was involved with the Walnut Amvets and Legion. He was a trustee for many years for the Monroe Township and President of the Low Rent Housing in Walnut. He was a faithful member of Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut serving in many capacities over 62 years.
The family farm was home to Gene and Paula for 45 years. Gene retired from farming in 2015 and they moved to Indianola to be closer to their sons' families. Gene enjoyed his retirement doing tractor rides on his Oliver 77, camping, fishing and traveling with Paula. He especially found joy in attending his grandkids activities.
Gene is survived by his wife Paula Troll; son Aric (Stacey) Troll and children, Savannah and Sarah Troll, and son Adam (Jennifer) Troll and children, Dylon, Landon and Rhaegan Troll; sisters, Carol Schwarte and Doris (Lester) Ballantyne; sisters-in-law, Pam (Stan) Frese and Connie (Roger) Pierce; and brother-in-law, Kevin (Pam) Hospelhorn; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Lois Troll; parents-in-law, Clarence and Mildred Hospelhorn; and brothers-in-law, Philip Hospelhorn and Don Schwarte.
Memorials, in memory of Gene, may be made to Disabled American Veterans or Peace United Church of Christ, Walnut, Iowa.
