Enid was born August 31, 1910, at Lewis, Iowa, to Mearl A. Gable and Ethelyn McKie Gable. She graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and received a BM degree in Music from Simpson College in 1932. She married E. Truman Burkey of Indianola on May 16, 1966. While Truman was in the Navy at Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, Enid worked at the Burkey Rexall Drug Store in Indianola. After his death in 1965, Enid worked in the offices of Clare Trueblood, M.D.
She was active in the Tri Delta alumnae, P.E.O., Clio Club, Shakespeare Club, and Simpson Guild. A member of the First United Methodist Church, she sang in the choir for several years and was a donor of the Gable Memorial Chapel, which was dedicated in 2002. She had traveled widely in the United States, Europe, South America and Asia.
In 1973, she married Gordon H. Schoenmann who died in 1977.
In 1991, she became a pioneer charter member of The Village Retirement Center in Indianola where she lived until her death. Enid actively contributed to The Village activities when she was able, helping with the gift shop and enjoying her many friends.
Enid is survived by her sister, Rowena Gable Malone, of Conway, AR and her niece, Megan E. Hobbs, of Conway, AR; a cousin, Joseph E. McKie of Three Oaks, MI; stepsons, Donn Schoenmann of San Francisco, CA and Nick Schoenmann of Redlands, CA. She is also survived by several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Central Iowa, Knoxville Office or P.E.O. Sisterhood.
