Obituary

Elon Mac Wilkerson, 80, returned to the Lord at 1:00 o'clock in the morning on Friday, January 4.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 10 at Overton Funeral Home.  Visitation will be from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 9 at Overton Funeral Home.

The youngest of five children, Elon was born June 19, 1927, in Enid, Oklahoma to Earl and Nettie Wilkerson.  Elon attended elementary, junior high and high school in Indianola, graduating in 1946.  He was a superb all-around athlete, excelling in football, baseball, track and boxing.

In the summer of 1949, he was united in marriage to Gerie Willits.  To this union were born three children, Jay, Jeff and Jodi.  Family always came first in Elon's life, and his many friends and neighbors were always considered part of his family.  He was involved in his children's activities, some of which included Little League coach, assistant scout master with Troop 126 at the Presbyterian Church and head coach with the Indianola Recreational Boxing league.

Elon retired from Farmer's Casualty Company in 1988 as an insurance adjuster.  In the fall of 2000, with his wife Gerie at his side, he made the most important decision of his life by accepting Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.  Although he began a new, fresh and vibrant life in the early morning hours of January 4th, he will be terribly missed but remembered and celebrated as a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and a true friend to many; a one of a kind—the mold is "broke!"

Elon was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Gerie, his parents and four siblings, Jackie, Jay, Francis and Earlene.  Left to cherish his memory are his two sons, Jay of Indianola and Jeff (Marla) of Mesquite, TX; his daughter, Jodi (Mark) Young of Indianola; two grandchildren, Joey Wilkerson and Jason Wilkerson, and two great grandchildren, Alexis and Austin Wilkerson, all of Mesquite, TX; sister-in-law Barbara Pennington of Indianola; brother-in-law, Ted Willits of Little Rock, AR; and eight nephews and nieces, as well as many life-long friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to Destiny Bible Church or Kiya Koda Humane Society.
